In the past decade, green building has gone mainstream in a big way. In 2000, according to the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, green construction starts were valued at approximately $200 million. In 2010, that number is projected to be $60 billion – a 300-fold increase. To put that number in perspective, it’s roughly half the value of all new U.S. private residential construction in 2009.
It’s no longer just the ultra-green types who are concerned with getting the most efficiency and sustainability out of their building projects. Mainstream America now understands that green building saves them money -- on energy costs as well as on the long-term performance of sustainable design and building.
Quality windows and doors, both new and replacement, can save your clients up to 25 percent on their heating and cooling bills. Additional savings can come from the $1,500 federal energy efficiency tax credit, available on eligible products purchased through the end of 2010.
Wood and clad wood fenestration products are also among the easiest ways to build greener. Look for top manufacturers that use sustainably grown wood and a high percentage of recycled glass and aluminum.
If you haven’t educated yourself about the latest green building products and techniques, you’re missing a chance to grow your business with savvy consumers who know what they want – and are prepared to pay for it.
Green building is the future, and the future is now.
